Welcome to the third quiz in our Very Easy section of Eleven Plus maths all about measures. If you have played the previous two then you’ll have had some practice converting imperial measures to metric ones, and vice versa. In this quiz we’ll be mixing it up a bit, for example, do you know how many inches there are in a mile, or centimetres in a yard? Let’s find out!

Here are some facts you may need to know before we begin:

- 1 foot = 12 inches
- 1 yard = 3 feet
- 1 mile = 1,760 yards
- 1 gallon = 8 pints
- 1 stone = 14 pounds
- 1 ton = 160 stones

You may or may not need to know these for the quiz – but it’s always good to learn!

And now, on with the quiz. Good luck!

1.

If 1 cm = 0.39 inches, how many inches are in one kilometre?

39,000 inches

39 inches

39 million inches

3,900 inches

2.

If 1 mile = 1.6 km, how many metres are in 8 miles?

12.8 metres

12,800 metres

1,280 metres

128,000 metres

1.6 x 8 = 12.8 so there are 12.8 km in 8 miles

There are 1,000 metres in one km so there must be 12,800 metres in 8 miles: 12.8 x 1,000 = 12,800

There are 1,000 metres in one km so there must be 12,800 metres in 8 miles: 12.8 x 1,000 = 12,800

3.

If 1 inch = 2.54 cm, how many cm are in a yard (to the nearest cm)?

31 cm

61 cm

91 cm

121 cm

For this one, you need to know how many inches there are in one yard: 1 yard = 3 feet; 1 foot = 12 inches; one yard = 3 x 12 = 36 inches.

Now, 2.54 x 36 = 91.44 cm which we round down to 91 cm in one yard

Now, 2.54 x 36 = 91.44 cm which we round down to 91 cm in one yard

4.

If 1 km = 0.62 miles, how many km are in 100 miles (to the nearest km)?

62 km

128 km

620 km

161 km

To work out the answer to this problem, we simply divide 100 by 0.62: 100 ÷ 0.62 = 161.29 which we round down to 161 km

5.

If 1 acre = 0.4 hectares, how many acres are in 17 hectares?

42.5 acres

6.8 acres

68 acres

4.25 acres

17 ÷ 0.4 = 42.5 – it really is as easy as that!

6.

If 1 litre = 1.76 pints, how many litres are in a gallon (to one decimal place)?

14.1 litres

4.5 litres

4 litres

5 litres

You need to know how many pints are in one gallon to solve this one: 1 gallon = 8 pints.

Next, we simply divide 8 by 1.76: 8 ÷ 1.76 = 4.54 which we round down to 4.5 litres

Next, we simply divide 8 by 1.76: 8 ÷ 1.76 = 4.54 which we round down to 4.5 litres

7.

If 1 pint = 568 ml, how many litres are in 2.25 pints?

1,278 litres

252 litres

1.278 litres

12.78 litres

If 1 pint = 568 ml then it also equals 0.568 litres (because there are 1,000 ml in one litre: 568 ÷ 1,000 = 0.568).

Now all we have to do is times 0.568 by 2.25 to find the answer: 0.568 x 2.25 = 1.278 litres

Now all we have to do is times 0.568 by 2.25 to find the answer: 0.568 x 2.25 = 1.278 litres

8.

If 1 ton = 1,016 kg, how many kg are in four tons?

254 kg

4,000 kg

508 kg

4,064 kg

1,016 x 4 = 4,064. I hope that question wasn’t too easy!

9.

If 1 inch = 2.54 cm, how many inches are in one metre (to the closest inch)?

254 inches

36 inches

125 inches

39 inches

There are 100 cm in one metre, so we need to divide 100 by 2.54 to find the answer: 100 ÷ 2.54 = 39.37 which we round down to 39 inches

10.

If 1 mile = 1.6 km, how many kilometres per hour is 80 miles per hour?

50 kph

128 kph

100 kph

142 kph

Don’t let the speed rather than distance put you off – working out the answer is just the same: 80 x 1.6 = 128 kph

There are 1,000 metres in one kilometre so there must be 39,000 inches in one kilometre: 39 x 1,000 = 39,000
