**Numbers that are below zero are known as negative** numbers. This is the first of two quizzes on negative numbers. If you think there is no use for negative numbers, think again: when the temperature falls below zero, it is recorded as a negative temperature, e.g. -5°C. If you owe money to the bank, your balance becomes negative.

Numbers to the left of zero are negative, but numbers to the right of zero are positive. As you move to the right along the number line, the numbers increase in size, but as you move to the left along the number line, the numbers decrease in size. In this case -3 is to the left of 3, so -3 < 3
