Pictorial Representation of Data (F)

Read and draw data displays: bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts. Convert frequencies to angles, choose appropriate scales, and label clearly for GCSE Foundation success.

Fascinating Fact:

In a music poll, a pie chart turns frequencies into angles using angle = frequency ÷ total × 360. If rock has 30 of 120, angle = 30 ÷ 120 × 360 = 90°.

In GCSE Maths, you interpret and draw charts to represent data clearly. Expect bar charts, line graphs and pie charts: pick sensible scales, label axes and keys, and calculate sector angles accurately.

  • Frequency: How many times a value or category occurs in a data set.
  • Sector angle: The angle for a pie chart slice, found by frequency ÷ total × 360°.
  • Scale: The spacing of values on an axis or chart; choose numbers that are easy to read and plot.
How do I work out a pie chart angle from a frequency?

Use angle = (frequency ÷ total) × 360°. For example, 30 out of 120 gives (30 ÷ 120) × 360° = 90°.

When should I use a bar chart, line graph, or pie chart?

Use a bar chart for comparing categories, a line graph for changes over time, and a pie chart to show parts of a whole as percentages or angles.

How do I choose a suitable scale for a graph?

Pick regular steps that cover the data range and fit the axis length. Avoid awkward steps; use easy intervals like 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, etc.
