Many appliances now have energy efficiency labels, which help consumers choose devices that use less energy and reduce running costs.

In GCSE Physics, you study how electrical appliances transform energy into useful forms, such as light in lamps or kinetic energy in motors. You also learn how power ratings, efficiency and time affect the total energy transferred and running cost. Understanding these ideas helps you compare appliances, explain wasted energy and make better choices about using electricity at home and in school.

  • Power rating: The rate at which an appliance transfers energy, usually measured in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW).
  • Efficiency: A measure of how much of the input energy is transferred usefully, often written as a percentage.
  • Kilowatt-hour: The energy transferred by a 1 kW appliance running for 1 hour, used as the unit on electricity bills.
How do you calculate the efficiency of an electrical appliance?

Efficiency of an electrical appliance is calculated using efficiency = useful output energy ÷ input energy × 100%. The closer the answer is to 100%, the less energy is wasted.

What does the power rating on an appliance tell you?

The power rating tells you how quickly an appliance transfers energy. A higher power rating means it transfers more energy per second, so it usually uses more electricity in the same time.
