Fascinating Fact:

A good sentence ends with a full stop, a question mark, or an exclamation mark.

In KS1 English Spelling (Year 1), learning to build a good sentence means writing words in the right order, leaving finger spaces, and making sure your writing is clear and easy to read.

  • Sentence: A group of words that makes sense on its own.
  • Capital letter: A tall letter used at the start of a sentence and for names.
  • Finger space: The gap you leave between words so they do not run together.
What makes a good sentence in Year 1?

A good Year 1 sentence makes sense, has the words in the right order, and is easy to read because the writer uses finger spaces and a capital at the start.

How do I know if my sentence makes sense?

You can read it back slowly and check it sounds right. If it sounds odd, try changing the word order or adding a missing word.

Why are finger spaces important in writing?

Finger spaces help readers see each word clearly. Without spaces, words join together and the sentence becomes hard to read.
