In KS1 English Spelling (Year 1), children learn to spot common word endings. The ending er often sounds like “uh” and appears in words for people and things.

  • Suffix: Letters added to the end of a word.
  • Root word: The main part of a word before an ending is added.
  • Syllable: A beat in a word that you can clap.
What does er mean at the end of a word?

The ending er can show a person or thing linked to an action or job, like a “runner”. It can also be part of a word you learn as a whole, like “under”.

How do you spell the er sound in Year 1?

In many Year 1 words, the sound at the end is spelled er. Children practise listening for the final sound, then checking the word ends with the letters e and r.

How can I help my child practise words ending with er?

Say a few er-ending words out loud and ask your child to spot the last sound. Then write the words and circle the ending er to help the spelling stick.
