Fascinating Fact:

Some verbs can look tricky when you drop the e, like “write” to “writing”. Saying the word slowly can help you remember the spelling.

In KS1 English Spelling, pupils learn how adding endings can change a word while keeping it readable. This quiz focuses on adding -ing to verbs to show an action happening now.

  • Verb: A doing word, such as jump, play, or smile.
  • Ending: Letters added to the end of a word, like -ing.
  • Base word: The main word before an ending is added, like play in playing.
What does adding -ing do to a word in Year 2 spelling?

Adding -ing to a verb shows the action is happening now or is ongoing, such as jump becoming jumping or read becoming reading.

When do you drop the e before adding -ing?

You usually drop the final e when a word ends in e, then add -ing, like make to making and write to writing.

Do all words double a letter before adding -ing?

No. Some short words double the final consonant, like run to running, but many words just add -ing, like play to playing.
