Fascinating Fact:

Use a capital for your name, like Eva, Noah, Ayaan, at the start only.

In KS1 English, children learn to spot and match upper-case and lower-case letters. They practise using capitals correctly for names and sentence starts, while keeping the rest of each word in lower case.

  • Capital letter: A big letter, like A, B, or N, used at the start of sentences and names.
  • Lower-case letter: The smaller letter, like a, b, or n, used for most of the writing in words.
  • Name (proper noun): A special name for a person, place, pet, or day that always begins with a capital letter.
When should KS1 children use capital letters in their writing?

KS1 children should use capital letters at the start of every sentence, for the word “I”, and for names of people, pets, places, days, and months.

How can I help my child remember to use a capital for their name?

Show them their name written correctly each day, trace the first capital letter together, and remind them that only the first letter in their name is a capital.

What is the difference between capital and lower-case letters?

Capital letters are bigger and used for special jobs, like starting sentences and names. Lower-case letters are smaller and used for the rest of each word.

We begin every sentence and name with a capital letter; all the other letters are lower case. The alphabet has 26 upper case letters (ABC) and lower case letters (abc). Every time you write your name, you begin with an upper case letter and the rest are lower case. See how many letters you remember.
