Fascinating Fact:

Alphabet games help, like ordering letter cards, matching big to small, and spotting capitals in storybooks.

In KS1 English, children practise upper-case and lower-case letters through play. Matching pairs, sorting letters, and spotting capitals in books make learning accurate letter use fun and memorable.

  • Alphabet: The full set of letters used in writing a language, from A to Z.
  • Upper-case letter: A capital letter, such as A, B, or M, used for names and sentence beginnings.
  • Lower-case letter: The smaller letter form, such as a, b, or m, used for most of each word.
How can KS1 children learn capital and small letters?

KS1 children learn by playing matching games, tracing letters, using alphabet cards, and spotting capitals and lower-case letters in simple storybooks and classroom displays.

Why are alphabet games useful in KS1?

Alphabet games make practice fun, build quick letter recognition, and help children remember which capital matches which small letter, improving reading and writing confidence.

When should children use capital letters instead of lower-case letters?

Children should use capital letters at the start of sentences, for the word “I”, and for names of people, pets, places, days, and months; all other letters stay lower case.

The English alphabet has 26 letters, sometimes we write them as upper case letters (ABC) and sometimes they are lower case letters (abc). When you start a sentence, you should always begin with an upper case letter. Your name will start with an upper case letter and the rest will be lower case. Test your knowledge on letters.
