Fascinating Fact:

First person sounds like talking to a friend, because the storyteller speaks directly: “I went… I saw… I did…”

In KS1 English, children learn to spot when a story is told in the first person. Words like I, me, and we show the narrator is inside the story, sharing thoughts and feelings.

  • First Person: When the storyteller uses I, me, and we to tell the story.
  • Pronoun: A word like I, she, or they that replaces a name in a sentence.
  • Narrator: The voice that tells the story and explains what is happening.
What is first person in KS1 English?

First person is when the writer or character tells the story using I, me, my, and we. It makes the reader feel close to the storyteller.

How can children spot first person in a story?

Children can look for pronouns like I, me, my, and we at the start or inside sentences. These clues show the story is told in first person.

Why do writers use first person with young readers?

Writers use first person to make the story feel friendly and personal, helping young readers understand a character’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences more clearly.
