Fascinating Fact:

Talking stories use irregular past tense when say becomes said, a gentle change for words already spoken.

In KS1 English, children discover that some verbs change in special ways in the past tense. Instead of adding -ed, words like say, go and come switch to said, went and came.

  • Verb: A doing or being word, such as run, talk, think or is.
  • Past tense: A verb form that shows an action has already happened.
  • Irregular past tense: A past tense that changes its form instead of adding -ed, like say → said.
What is an irregular past tense verb for KS1 children?

For KS1, an irregular past tense verb is a doing word that does not just add -ed. Examples are say → said, go → went and come → came.

How can I teach irregular past tense verbs in a simple way?

Start with common verb pairs in short sentences, like I say/I said and I go/I went. Read aloud and ask children to listen for the changed verbs.

Why do some verbs not use -ed in the past tense?

Some verbs are very old words that kept their own special past forms. We learn them by hearing and using them often, such as saw, went and said.
