Fascinating Fact:

Flowers can grow into fruits and seeds so new plants can grow.

In KS1 Geography, children learn that plants grow all around Earth, from parks and gardens to countryside fields. They find out what plants need to stay healthy and how plants change as they grow.

  • Plant: A living thing that usually has roots, stems, leaves and sometimes flowers.
  • Seed: A small part of a plant that can grow into a new plant.
  • Soil: The top layer of the ground where many plants grow and take in water and nutrients.
What do plants need to grow for KS1 children?

Plants need light, water, air, the right temperature, soil and space to grow. Without these things a plant may grow weakly or not survive.

How does a seed grow into a plant?

A seed takes in water, then a tiny root and shoot appear. The root grows into the soil, the shoot grows towards the light and slowly becomes a full plant.

Why are plants important for people and animals?

Plants give us oxygen to breathe, food to eat, materials like wood and cotton, and homes for many animals such as birds, insects and small mammals.
