Fascinating Fact:

One teddy has 1 hat, so 1 × 1 = 1 hat. One group of one stays the same.

In KS1 Maths, the 1 times table helps children understand that multiplying by 1 keeps a number the same. It also links to counting forwards in ones and spotting number patterns.

  • Multiply: To find the total when you have equal groups of something.
  • Times table: A set of number facts that shows what you get when you multiply.
  • Equal groups: Groups that each have the same number in them.
What is the 1 times table?

The 1 times table shows that any number multiplied by 1 stays the same, for example 6 × 1 = 6 and 1 × 6 = 6.

Why does multiplying by 1 keep the number the same?

Multiplying by 1 means you have one group of that number, so you still have the same amount as you started with.

How can I help a child learn the 1 times table at home?

Use simple objects like coins or blocks and make one group each time, then say the fact aloud, such as “one group of 4 is 4”. Repeat with different numbers.
