Fascinating Fact:

Contact and contract both begin with contact / contract sounds. Use the sentence to help you choose: make contact with someone, sign a contract for a job.

In KS3 English Spelling, you meet many words that start with cont, such as continue, control and contain. Noticing shared openings helps you spot patterns and remember tricky spellings more reliably.

  • Prefix: A group of letters added to the beginning of a word, like con or cont, that helps build meaning and spelling patterns.
  • Root word: The basic form of a word that carries the main meaning, for example tract in contract or struct in construct.
  • Stress pattern: The part of a word that is said more strongly. Changing stress can affect how a word sounds but not how it is spelled.
How can I improve my spelling of cont words in KS3 English?

Make a list of cont words, say them slowly, underline the shared cont beginning and practise writing them in short sentences. Regular practice will fix the patterns in your memory.

Why do so many English words start with con or cont?

Many con and cont words come from Latin roots that were brought into English over time. Because they share roots, they often have similar meanings and spelling patterns.
