Fascinating Fact:

Evidence and evident share the same start. Spell them e-vi-dence and e-vi-dent, keeping evi- the same in both forms.

In KS3 English Spelling, pupils meet many words beginning with ev-, such as evidence, evident and everyday. They learn to break these words into chunks, listen for each syllable and link spellings to meanings so they can use them accurately in reading, writing and exam answers.

  • Root word: The basic form of a word, like evidence, to which endings such as -s or -d can be added.
  • Syllable: A beat or sound unit in a word, for example e-vi-dence has three clear syllables.
  • Consonant cluster: Two or more consonants together, as in the v-d sound in evidence and evident.
What does the word evidence mean in English?

Evidence means facts, information or clues that show whether something is true. In English lessons you might look for evidence in a text to support your ideas or arguments.

How can I remember the spelling of evidence and evident?

Link the spellings to their meanings. Evidence is the facts you find, while something evident is clearly seen. Saying both words aloud and writing them in short sentences helps fix them in your memory.
