Fascinating Fact:

Beaming groups rhythms by beat. Join quavers and semiquavers within each beat to show counting clearly.

In Specialist Music Theory Grade 2 Note Types, you learn how rhythmic values fit into beats and bars. You will group quavers and semiquavers correctly, choose the right rests, and read patterns with confidence.

  • Beaming: The joining of note stems with horizontal beams to show one beat group clearly.
  • Quaver: An eighth note worth half a crotchet beat. Two quavers fill one crotchet beat.
  • Semiquaver: A sixteenth note worth a quarter of a crotchet beat. Four semiquavers fill one crotchet beat.
How do you beam quavers in Grade 2 music theory?

Beam quavers and semiquavers within each beat, not across beats. In 4/4, group them so each crotchet beat is shown clearly for easy counting.

How many quavers or semiquavers fit in one beat?

In simple time with a crotchet beat, two quavers make one beat and four semiquavers make one beat. Mixed groups must still total one beat.

When should I use rests in Grade 2 rhythms?

Use rests to show silence for the exact value of the missing notes. Choose the rest that matches the beat grouping so the rhythm remains clear.
