Fascinating Fact:

A turn spells upper, main, lower, main. Accidentals above or below the sign alter the neighbouring notes.

In Specialist Music Theory Grade 5, you read and perform common ornaments that add expression to melodies. You will recognise symbols, decide the starting note from style or editor guidance, and fit the extra notes neatly into the beat.

  • Trill: A rapid alternation between a written note and its upper neighbor for the marked duration.
  • Mordent: A quick dip to a neighbor and back. Upper mordent uses the note above, lower mordent uses the note below.
  • Turn: A four note figure circling the written note using its upper and lower neighbors.
How do I play a trill at Grade 5?

Alternate quickly between the written note and its upper neighbor. Start on the upper note in many Baroque and Classical contexts, unless the score or editor indicates otherwise.

What is the difference between a mordent and an inverted mordent?

A mordent dips to the upper neighbor then returns. An inverted mordent dips to the lower neighbor then returns. Both are very quick and usually on the beat.

What do small notes with or without a slash mean?

A small note with a slash is an acciaccatura, played very quickly before the beat. A small note without a slash is an appoggiatura, usually taking time from the main beat.
