Fascinating Fact:

Major scales follow tone tone semitone tone tone tone semitone. Check small steps between degrees 3 to 4 and 7 to 8.

In Specialist Music Theory Grade 5 (Scales Part 2), you’ll apply interval patterns to build scales quickly and correctly. You’ll check key signatures, manage accidentals, and confirm the semitone positions for accuracy.

  • Tone: A whole step—two semitones between notes (e.g., C to D on the piano).
  • Semitone: The smallest step in Western music—adjacent notes (e.g., E to F).
  • Key Signature: Sharps or flats written at the start of the staff showing which notes are altered throughout the piece.
How do I check a major scale is correct in Grade 5?

Run the pattern tone–tone–semitone–tone–tone–tone–semitone from the tonic. The semitones must fall between degrees 3–4 and 7–8 for a correct major scale.

What’s the quickest way to choose the right sharps or flats?

Start from the key signature, then apply the major pattern. If a step doesn’t match the pattern, add the necessary accidental to keep tones and semitones in place.

How is melodic minor different from the major scale pattern?

Major always follows T–T–S–T–T–T–S. Melodic minor raises 6th and 7th ascending but usually lowers them when descending, so its pattern changes depending on direction.
