Delaware
Delaware is the 49th largest of the US states, covering an area of 1,982 square miles or 6,452 square km.
Delaware has several nicknames including The Peach Blossom State, Blue Hen State and Small Wonder. This last nickname is due to the many contributions Delaware has made to the world despite its small size.
Delaware is named after the English soldier and statesman Thomas West, the 3rd Baron De La Warr who lived from 1577 – 1618.
The highest point in Delaware is 447 feet or 136 metres. Its average elevation is 60 feet or 20 metres, making it the lowest US state in terms of mean height above sea level.
The American Holly is Delaware's official state tree. It was adopted on May the 1st 1939.
Delaware was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. It did this on December the 7th 1787, making it the first state of the USA.
The Weakfish (also known as the Yellowmouth, the Sea trout, the grey trout, the Tiderunner, the Yellow Fin Trout and the Squeteague) was adopted as Delaware's official state fish in 1981.
Delaware has the 45th highest population of all the US states with an estimated 925,749 inhabitants in 2013.
The first permanent European colony in Delaware was New Sweden. It was founded in 1638 and its capital was Fort Christina, named after the then Swedish queen.
