Georgia was the fourth state to join the Union. It did so on the 2nd of January 1788

As well as peaches, Georgia is the USAs largest cultivator of two other foods beginning with P - the peanut and the pecan nut.

Georgia has the 8th highest population of all the states with an estimated 9,992,167 inhabitants in 2013.

The world famous soft drink 'Coca-Cola' was invented in Atlanta, Georgia in 1886 by Dr. John S. Pemberton.

The man who had been elected State governor died before he took up the post. This led to disagreements about who should be the new governor: the elected Lieutenant Governor, the elected Governor's son or the previous Governor. Secretary of State Ben Fortson hid the seal so that none of the three could do any government business until the matter was resolved.

The elected Lieutenant Governor was eventually made 'Acting Governor' until an election could be held. The deceased elected Governor's son won that election and took his father's place in the capitol
