Louisiana
Louisiana was once a part of the French Territory of Louisiana. This vast tract of land covered what is now Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and parts of North and South Dakota, Minnesota, New Mexico, Texas, of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Canada, as well as Louisiana. The land was bought from France for $15 million in the 'Louisiana Purchase' of 1804, and the size of the USA almost doubled!
Louisiana was admitted to the Union on the 30th of April 1812, making it the 18th state of the USA.
Louisiana was named La Louisiane (meaning Land of Louis) by the French explorer Robert de La Salle when he claimed the land in the name of France. It was named in honour of the French king at the time, Louis XIV, the Sun King.
The sweet potato was adopted as Louisiana's official state vegetable in 2003. Louisiana produces approximately one sixth of all the sweet potatoes grown in the United States.

Baton Rouge was chosen as the state's capital city in 1849. Before then both New Orleans and Donaldsonville had been the seats of government. During the Civil War, when Baton Rouge was captured by Union troops Opelousas became the capital until it too was captured. Shreveport then became the new capital until the war's end in 1865 when Baton Rouge returned to the role
