Nevada was admitted to the Union on the 31st of October, 1864, making it the 36th state of the USA..

The film star Thomas Ian Nicholas was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1980. Other famous Nevadans include Brandon Flowers, the lead-singer with The Killers and the novelist, songwriter and entertainer, Harry Shannon.

The state stone of Nevada is sandstone, but its state mineral is silver. Both are found in the state.

Nevada is the 7th largest US state. It covers and area of 110,622 square miles (286,367 square km) - that's just a little bit smaller than the British Isles!.

Nevada's state motto is All For Our Country. This was adopted two years after Nevada gained statehood. Prior to that the motto of Nevada had been the Latin phrase Volens et Potens

The highest point in Nevada is Boundary Peak which stands some 13,147 feet or 4,007 metres above seal level. Its many mountains give Nevada the fifth highest average elevation of all the US states.

Nevada is named after the Sierra Nevada mountain range, which takes its own name from the Spanish word, Nevada, "snow-covered". Even in the desert environment of Nevada the mountains still have a blanket of snow during the winter months.

Nevada is the 35th most populous of the US states. In 2014 it had an estimated 2,839,099 inhabitants. That's slightly more than Birmingham, England's second largest city.

Oryzopsis hymenoides, better known as Indian ricegrass, was chosen as the state grass of Nevada in 1977. Utah followed suit, choosing the same in 1990.
