New York

New York was admitted to the Union on the 26th of July 1788, becoming the 11th state of the USA.

Four Presidents of the United States were born in the State of New York - Martin Van Buren, Millard Fillmore, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D Roosevelt.

New York's state motto is the Latin word Excelsior which translates into English as Higher or Ever Upward.

New York has the fourth highest population of all the states in the USA. In 2014 it had an estimated 19,746,227 inhabitants. That's about the same as Romania.

The film stars Lucille Ball, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Tom Cruise and Christopher Reeve were all born in the State of New York, as were the Marx Brothers Groucho, Gummo, Zeppo, Chico, and Harpo.

New York has also given musicians to the world. George Gershwin, Billy Joel, Duane Eddy, Carole King and Jennifer Rush were all born in the state.

New York has an average elevation of exactly 1,000 feet (304.8metres). The state's highest point is Mount Marcy at 5,343 feet or 1,629 metres.

The Red Spotted Purple or White Admiral Butterfly won the New York State Butterfly Election in 2008. The Karner Blue came in second.

New York State has and area of 54,555 square miles or 141,300 square km which is just slightly larger than England. This makes New York the 27th largest state in the USA.
