Year 1 Position, Direction and Motion
There are many words we use to describe direction, like up, down, left and right.

Year 1 Position, Direction and Motion

Learn position words and directions: left, right, forwards, backwards, and turns. Use clockwise, anticlockwise, quarter-turns and half-turns to follow routes and give instructions.

Fascinating Fact:

Turn the way the clock hands go, clockwise, like chasing minutes round the face.

In KS1 Maths, children describe position and movement using words like left, right, forwards, and backwards. They make quarter and half turns, and learn clockwise and anticlockwise to follow or give clear instructions.

  • Clockwise: Turning in the same direction as a clock’s hands.
  • Anticlockwise: Turning the opposite way to a clock’s hands.
  • Quarter turn: A right-angle turn; four make a full circle.

Practise ordering and comparing first: try the Numeracy Game before you start the quiz.

What does clockwise mean in Year 1 maths?

Clockwise means turning the same way as a clock’s hands move around the face. It helps children follow routes and give turning instructions.

How can I teach left and right to KS1 pupils?

Use real movement: “step forwards three, turn right a quarter turn.” Mark an L on the left hand, and practise with simple obstacle courses or classroom maps.

What is a quarter turn and a half turn?

A quarter turn is a 90° turn to face a new side. A half turn is 180°, turning to face the opposite way. Four quarter turns make a full turn.
