Welcome to this, the second of our Easy Eleven Plus maths quizzes on Solving Problems. Like the previous quizzes, this one will ask you to find the answers to questions involving weights and measures. They are not too hard – just apply a little logic and you will be fine.

Let’s say that you want to know how much paint you will need to cover a wall measuring 5 metres by 2 metres. The total area of the wall is 10 m^{2} (5 x 2 = 10). Now, if a tin of paint covers 2 square metres, then you will need 5 tins of paint (10 ÷ 2 = 5).

See how easy it is if you apply a little thought? The questions we will pose you are of a similar vein. Just read them thoroughly, think hard, and then choose your answers. The more you practice, the better you will be - as if a weight had been removed from your shoulders!

1 .

A hectare is the same as 2.47 acres. If farmer Giles has 197 acres of land, how many hectares does he have? (Round your answer to the nearest whole number.)

80 hectares

161 hectares

243 hectares

487 hectares

2 .

Rachel’s car can travel 20 km on one litre of fuel. How much fuel will Rachel need if she wants to travel 170 km?

4.25 litres

8.5 litres

12.75 litres

17 litres

If one litre of fuel will take Rachel 20 km, then we divide 170 by 20 to find how much fuel she will need:

170 ÷ 20 = 8.5 litres

170 ÷ 20 = 8.5 litres

3 .

It takes 3 men 2 days to build a 12-metre-long wall. How long would it take for one man working at the same rate to complete the job?

4 days

5 days

6 days

8 days

First we need to work out how much wall one man can build in a day. If three men can build 12 metres in 2 days, then 1 man can build 4 metres in 2 days (12 ÷ 3 = 4). If one man can build 4 metres of wall in 2 days, then he can build 2 metres in 1 day.

Now we know how much work one man can do in one day, we need to find out how long it will take him to build 12 metres of wall:

12 ÷ 2 = 6. It will take one man 6 days to complete the job

Now we know how much work one man can do in one day, we need to find out how long it will take him to build 12 metres of wall:

12 ÷ 2 = 6. It will take one man 6 days to complete the job

4 .

A lorry has a capacity of 86 cubic metres (86 m^{3}). If a box measures 50 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm, how many boxes can be loaded onto the lorry?

172 boxes

344 boxes

516 boxes

688 boxes

First we need to find out the volume of one box in cubic metres: 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.125 m^{3}.

0.125 is one eighth of 1 (1 ÷ 0.125 = 8) so, to find out how many boxes will fit onto the lorry, we multiply 86 (its capacity) by 8:

86 x 8 = 688

0.125 is one eighth of 1 (1 ÷ 0.125 = 8) so, to find out how many boxes will fit onto the lorry, we multiply 86 (its capacity) by 8:

86 x 8 = 688

5 .

Sarah has three pet dogs. Each dog needs 3 tins of food a day. How many tins of dog food will Sarah need to feed her dogs for a week?

63 tins

54 tins

36 tins

21 tins

Sarah has three dogs, each needing three tins of food a day. So, she needs 3 x 3 = 9 tins of food every day.

There are seven days in a week so next we must multiply 9 by 7:

9 x 7 = 63

There are seven days in a week so next we must multiply 9 by 7:

9 x 7 = 63

6 .

A furlong is a measure of distance equal to 220 yards, or one-eighth of a mile. How many furlongs are there in 17.5 miles?

70 furlongs

140 furlongs

210 furlongs

280 furlongs

Don’t be put off when you encounter a measure you are unfamiliar with – all the information you need is in the question:

If one furlong = one-eighth of a mile then simply multiply 17.5 by 8 for your answer:

17.5 x 8 = 140

If one furlong = one-eighth of a mile then simply multiply 17.5 by 8 for your answer:

17.5 x 8 = 140

7 .

Scarlett left for work at 6.29 am. It took her 48 minutes to get into town on the bus, and another 17 minutes to walk to work. What time did Scarlett arrive at work?

7.14 am

7.24 am

7.34 am

7.44 am

Scarlett’s journey took 65 minutes in total (48 + 17 = 65).

There are 60 minutes in an hour, so we know that Scarlett’s journey lasted 1 hour and 5 minutes.

1 hour and 5 minutes after 6.29 am is 7.34 am

There are 60 minutes in an hour, so we know that Scarlett’s journey lasted 1 hour and 5 minutes.

1 hour and 5 minutes after 6.29 am is 7.34 am

8 .

1 mile = 1.61 km. What would a distance of 32 kilometres be in miles? (Round your answer to the nearest whole number.)

52 miles

42 miles

32 miles

20 miles

To convert kilometres to miles, divide by 1.61:

32 ÷ 1.61 = 19.875, which we round up to 20 miles.

To convert miles to kilometres we would reverse the process and multiply by 1.61:

20 x 1.61 = 32.2, which we round down to 32 km

32 ÷ 1.61 = 19.875, which we round up to 20 miles.

To convert miles to kilometres we would reverse the process and multiply by 1.61:

20 x 1.61 = 32.2, which we round down to 32 km

9 .

James walks at an average speed of 3 miles per hour. He goes on a sponsored walk which is 7 and a half miles long. How many minutes will it take James to complete the walk?

90 minutes

120 minutes

150 minutes

180 minutes

If it takes James 1 hour to walk 3 miles, then to find out how long it will take him to walk 7.5 miles, we divide 7.5 by 3:

7.5 ÷ 3 = 2.5 hours.

Next, we have to convert hours to minutes by multiplying by 60:

2.5 x 60 = 150 minutes

7.5 ÷ 3 = 2.5 hours.

Next, we have to convert hours to minutes by multiplying by 60:

2.5 x 60 = 150 minutes

10 .

Malcolm has hung out 17 pairs of socks to dry on his washing line. If it takes one sock 2 hours to dry, how long will it take for all of Malcolm’s socks to dry?

2 hours

17 hours

34 hours

68 hours

Did you get caught out here? They will ALL have dried in 2 hours: there is NO relationship between the number of socks and the drying time. D'oh!
