Picking a Figure to Fulfil Criteria illustration | Wow factor
You've heard of the x-factor, and the wow factor, but do you know what a factor is in maths?

Pick a Figure 1

Picking a Figure to Fulfil Criteria will test whether or not you know the meaning of mathematical terms like factor, prime, multiple and square. As long as you know what these are, and you can do some basic maths, you should find this quiz a doddle.

Here are definitions of those terms, just in case you need a reminder:

  • Factor – a number which divides into another number without leaving a remainder
  • Multiple – a number in another number’s times table
  • Prime – a number which can only be divided by two numbers (one and itself) without leaving a remainder
  • Square – the answer we get if we multiply a number by itself

Now we’ve refreshed your memory, it’s time for the quiz. Please make sure you don’t rush. Failing to spot the word ‘not’ in a question can make all the difference. Good luck!

Example:
Which of the following is not a factor of 24?

2, 6, 4, 48, 12

Answer:
‘Factor’ means a number which fits exactly into another. The numbers 2, 4, 6 and 12 all fit into 24 whereas 48 does not, so the correct answer is 48.
1 .
Which of the following is not a multiple of 3?

27, 15, 37, 42, 12
37
12
42
27
Multiples are numbers you find after multiplying another number. More simply, if a number is in another number’s times table, then it is a multiple of that number. To quickly see if a number is a multiple of another, divide it by the other number and, if there is no remainder, it is a multiple.
All of the options, except 37, can be divided by 3 with no remainder
2 .
Which of the following is a square number?

99, 18, 81, 35, 62
99
62
18
81
Square numbers are what we get when we multiply a number by itself. 81 is the square of 9 because 9 x 9 = 81. None of the other options are square numbers
3 .
Which of the following is not a factor of 36?

12, 36, 18, 72, 4
12
18
72
4
Factors are numbers which divide into another number without leaving a remainder. The factors of 36 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 36. The number 72 is not a factor of 36, but 36 is a factor of 72
4 .
Which of the following is a factor of 51?

19, 7, 17, 26, 13
26
17
13
19
Factors are numbers which divide into another number without leaving a remainder. The factors of 51 are 1, 3, 17 and 51. The only one of these amongst the options is 17
5 .
Which of the following is a multiple of 4?

4, 34, 18, 22, 54
34
18
54
4

The only one of the options which can be divided by 4 with no remainder is 4 – numbers are always multiples of themselves
6 .
Which of the following is a factor of 74?

3, 21, 37, 4, 16
21
3
37
4
Factors are numbers which divide into another number without leaving a remainder. The factors of 74 are 1, 2, 37 and 74. None of the other numbers have 74 in their times tables
7 .
Which of the following is not a factor of 20?

2, 4, 5, 8, 10
5
8
4
2
Factors are numbers which divide into another number without leaving a remainder. The factors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10 and 20. The number 8 is not a factor of 20, because 20 does not appear in the 8 times table
8 .
Which of the following is not a multiple of 9?

27, 83, 9, 18, 54
83
9
27
54

All of the options, except 83, can be divided by 9 with no remainder
9 .
Which of the following is a multiple of 7?

16, 27, 49, 54, 29
16
54
49
27
Multiples are numbers you find after multiplying another number. More simply, if a number is in another number’s times table, then it is a multiple of that number. To quickly see if a number is a multiple of another, divide it by the other number and, if there is no remainder, it is a multiple.
The only one of the options which can be divided by 7 with no remainder is 49
10 .
Which of the following is a prime number?

27, 7, 39, 18, 57
39
57
7
27
Prime numbers can only be divided by two numbers (one and themselves) without leaving a remainder. They will only appear in the 1 times table and their own times table, but in no others. The number 7 is the only option which can meet these requirements
