Fascinating Fact:

Word grouping has been part of education since Ancient Greece when students were trained to classify knowledge.

In 11 Plus Verbal Reasoning, pupils meet grouping challenges where words share hidden links. These might be categories, synonyms, or attributes. Learning to classify words builds vocabulary and logical thinking.

  • Classification: Sorting things into categories based on shared qualities.
  • Connection: The common link that ties items in a group together.
  • Vocabulary: The collection of words a person knows and understands.
What does word grouping mean in 11 Plus Verbal Reasoning?

It means recognising the theme of each set of words, such as fruit, body parts, or synonyms, and then placing a new test word into the correct group.

How can I get better at word grouping questions?

Practise by quickly labelling each group with a theme, then compare the test word to the labels to see which one fits best.

Why are grouping questions included in the 11 Plus?

They test reasoning, memory, and vocabulary, helping pupils show they can spot patterns and think logically under exam conditions.

For further support, see our parent guide on what subjects are tested in the 11 Plus .

Example:
Below are four groups of words. All of those in the same group are connected in some way. Once you have worked out what the connection is between the words in each group, decide which group the test word goes in to.
