Fascinating Fact:

English is full of prefixes and suffixes which change the meaning of a root word, like happy becoming unhappy or happiness.

In 11 Plus Verbal Reasoning, questions often test how well you know word structures. Prefixes, suffixes, and root words are important tools for building vocabulary and problem solving.

  • Prefix: A set of letters added to the start of a word to change its meaning, like re in replay.
  • Suffix: A set of letters added to the end of a word to alter its form or meaning, like ness in kindness.
  • Root Word: The base form of a word before prefixes or suffixes are added, such as play in replay or playful.
What is the difference between prefixes and suffixes?

A prefix goes at the start of a word and changes its meaning, while a suffix goes at the end and often changes its form or tense.

Why are prefixes and suffixes important in the 11 Plus?

They help pupils understand how words are built, making it easier to work out meanings and answer verbal reasoning questions accurately.

How can I learn common prefixes and suffixes?

You can practise by keeping lists of common ones, looking for them when reading, and testing yourself with word puzzles and quizzes.
