Fascinating Fact:

Sport remained important, both to watch and to play. Football, cricket, and rugby matches drew large crowds and more games were shown on television.

In GCSE History, this part of the course looks at changes in leisure between 1960 and 1979. You study how higher incomes, shorter working hours and new technologies affected how people spent their free time, and why not everyone shared the same opportunities.

  • Leisure: Time when people are not at work or school and can choose how to relax or enjoy themselves.
  • Disposable income: Money that is left after essential bills are paid, which can be spent on leisure and non essentials.
  • Spectator sport: A sport that large numbers of people watch, either live at a venue or on television.
How did leisure activities change in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s?

Leisure activities widened to include more television, foreign package holidays, music events, home entertainment and organised sport. More families could afford trips, hobbies and regular outings than in the 1950s.

Why did more people have leisure time in Britain after 1960?

Many workers had shorter hours, paid holidays and higher wages. Labour saving devices at home reduced housework, so people often had more energy and time for leisure activities.

What leisure examples should I revise for GCSE Britain 1951 1979?

It is useful to revise the growth of television, increased car ownership, package holidays, changes in sport and the ways in which youth culture and music influenced free time.
