Fascinating Fact:

If a word ends in a consonant, you usually just add -er, like “farm” to “farmer”. The main word stays the same.

In KS1 English Spelling, pupils practise how suffixes can change a word’s meaning. This quiz focuses on adding -er, often to show a person who does a job or activity, and on keeping the root word spelled correctly.

  • Suffix: Letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
  • Root word: The main word that stays when you add an ending, like paint in painter.
  • Noun: A naming word, such as teacher, runner, or farmer.
What does the ending -er mean in Year 2 spelling?

The ending -er often means a person who does something. For example, a runner is a person who runs, and a teacher is a person who teaches.

How do you spell a word when you add -er?

You start with the root word, then add -er. Check the root word still looks right and sounds right, like jump becoming jumper.

Is -er only used for jobs?

No, -er can also show someone who does an action, not just a job. For example, a reader reads, and a swimmer swims.
