Fascinating Fact:

Contractions make two words into one, and they use an apostrophe. “Do not” becomes “don’t”, and “I am” becomes “I’m”.

In KS1 English Spelling, a Year 2 spelling review checks lots of skills you have learnt already. You might practise tricky words, common spelling patterns, and how to choose the right letters when words sound similar.

  • Spelling pattern: A rule that helps you spell a group of words, like adding -ed for the past.
  • Tricky word: A word that does not follow an easy rule, so you often need to learn it by heart.
  • Proofread: To check your writing and fix spelling mistakes before you finish.
What is a spelling review in Year 2?

A Year 2 spelling review is a practise task that mixes different spelling rules and tricky words you have learnt, so you can show you remember them.

How can I help my child get better at spelling in Year 2?

Practise little and often, say the word slowly, spot a pattern, and use it in a short sentence. Reading lots also helps children notice correct spellings.

What should my child check when proofreading a sentence?

They should check capital letters, full stops, and tricky words. They can also look for the right spelling pattern, such as -ed, -ing, or a prefix.

1 .
Your ____ won't get lost in this train ____.
child and stashun
child and stasion
childe and stasion
child and station
The end of station sounds like 'shun' but is spelt 'tion'.
2 .
Dolphins are the ____ creatures in the world!
happiest
happyest
happyiest
hapyiest
If you are changing the root word, like happy, and it ends in a 'y' - we replace the 'y' for an 'i'.
3 .
The bird was ____ as it flew around the flower.
huming
humin
hummin
humming
It happens to be a hummingbird. The word 'hum' has a short vowel sound, so we need to double the last letter then add 'ing'.
4 .
This is the ____ cat in the whole world!
sadest
saddest
saddist
sadist
We need to add 'd' then 'est' onto the word 'sad'.
5 .

panefall
painful
painfal
painfull
By adding the suffix 'ful' we are saying that he was full of pain!

galary
galery
You can see plenty of modern art at the Tate Modern in London and admission is free.

pensuls
This spelling pattern looked at the 'il' sound when it made an 'al' sound instead.
8 .
I ____ pass that sign if I were you!
wooldnt
wouldnt
wouldn't
would'nt
Here we are joining the words would and not together but erasing the 'o'.
9 .
I ____ seen one of these animals before.
havent
have'nt
haven't
havn't
The apostrophe replaces the missing 'o'.
10 .
