Year 1 Measurements - Length and Height

In KS1 Maths, we measure length and height to compare objects. Learn words like longer, shorter, taller, then use rulers to read centimetres carefully from zero.

Fascinating Fact:

Height tells how tall something is. A chair might be 40 cm from floor to seat when measured.

In KS1 Maths, pupils compare length and height using everyday objects and standard units. They learn to line up rulers at zero, read whole centimetres, and decide which item is longer, shorter, or taller.

  • Length: How long something is from end to end.
  • Height: How tall something is from base to top.
  • Centimetre (cm): A small unit used on a ruler to measure length or height.
What is the difference between length and height?

Length is how long something is side to side. Height is how tall something is from the bottom to the top. Both are measured in centimetres in Year 1.

How do I measure with a ruler correctly?

Place the ruler so the zero lines up with the edge of the object. Keep the ruler straight, then read the number at the other end of the object.

Which words do we use to compare sizes in Year 1?

Use taller/shorter for height and longer/shorter for length. You can also say the same length if two items measure equally.
