Year 1 Measurements - Mass and Weight

In KS1 Maths, mass and weight show how heavy things are. Learn heavier and lighter, then use scales to read grams carefully and compare which object weighs more.

Fascinating Fact:

Mass or weight tells how heavy something is. A pencil might weigh 10 g on the classroom scales.

In KS1 Maths, pupils compare how heavy objects are using words like heavier and lighter. They practise with balance and digital scales, line readings up to zero, and read whole grams to decide which object has the greater mass.

  • Mass/Weight: How heavy an object is when measured on scales.
  • Heavier/Lighter: Words used to compare which object has more or less mass.
  • Gram (g): A small unit used to measure mass in Year 1.
How do I read grams on a set of scales?

Make sure the scale starts at zero, place the object on the tray, then read the number the pointer or display shows in grams.

What is the difference between heavier and lighter?

Heavier means the object has more mass and will push the scale down more. Lighter means it has less mass.

Which scales do we use in Year 1?

Children use simple balance scales and easy digital scales to compare masses and read whole grams.
