Fascinating Fact:

Spot patterns. A column on the hundred square ends 2, 12, 22, 32… Read “two, twelve, twenty-two…”

In KS1 Maths, pupils read and write numbers to 100. They use a hundred square to see patterns, say tens and ones out loud, and connect spoken words to written digits.

  • Hundred square: A chart showing numbers 1 to 100 in ten rows and ten columns.
  • Digit: A single number symbol, like 0 to 9, used to write numbers.
  • Number name: The word form of a number, such as “seventy six”.

Practise number reading with the Numeracy Game to build quick, confident skills.

How do you read numbers to 100 in KS1?

Say the tens first, then the ones. For 76, say “seventy six”. If there are no ones, say only the tens, for example “forty”.

What is a hundred square and how does it help?

A hundred square is a grid from 1 to 100. It helps you see patterns, count in tens down columns, and check which numbers come before or after.

What patterns should I look for when reading to 100?

Look down columns for adding ten, across rows for adding one, and notice ending digits like 5, 15, 25, which line up in the same column.
