Fascinating Fact:

Morning or evening. “Quarter past 7” could be breakfast (7 am) or bedtime story (7 pm). Same time, different part of day.

In KS1 Maths, children learn to read quarter past and quarter to on analogue clocks. They count minutes in groups of five and use the hands to match real-life daily events.

  • Quarter past: Fifteen minutes after the hour, such as quarter past 3 (3:15).
  • Quarter to: Fifteen minutes before the next hour, such as quarter to 4 (3:45).
  • Minute hand: The long hand that shows how many minutes past or to the hour.
How do you explain quarter past and quarter to in KS1?

Show that the clock face is like a circle cut into four equal parts. One quarter turn is 15 minutes, so quarter past is 15 past and quarter to is 15 to.

What time is quarter past 7 on a clock?

Quarter past 7 is 7:15. The minute hand points at the 3, and the hour hand has just moved past the 7.

What time is quarter to 5 on a clock?

Quarter to 5 is 4:45. The minute hand points at the 9, and the hour hand is close to the 5 but not there yet.
