Fascinating Fact:

Using more than one sense. When you eat soup, you see it, smell it, taste it, and feel the warmth. Senses are a team.

In KS1 Science, children learn about the five senses and the body parts that link to them. They discover how eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin send messages to the brain.

  • Sense: A way your body collects information, such as sight, hearing, smell, taste or touch.
  • Sensory organ: A body part, like the eye or ear, that helps you notice the world around you.
  • Stimulus: Something that your senses detect, such as light, sound, a smell, a flavour or a texture.
What are the five senses in KS1 science?

The five senses are sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. KS1 children learn which body parts are used for each sense and how they help us every day.

How do I explain senses to KS1 children?

Explain that senses are how our bodies collect clues. Eyes see, ears hear, noses smell, tongues taste and skin feels, helping us stay safe and understand our surroundings.

Why is learning about senses important in primary school?

Learning about senses helps children notice dangers, enjoy experiences and use clear language. It also supports science, reading and speaking by encouraging good observation skills.
