Fascinating Fact:

Animal super-senses. Dogs smell better, owls hear better. Different animals sense energy in different ways.

In KS1 Science, children learn that senses detect different forms of energy. Light, sound, touch, smell and taste signals travel to our brains, helping us stay safe and understand our surroundings.

  • Senses: The ways our body notices the world, such as seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching.
  • Signal: A message carried from sense organs to the brain so we know what is happening.
  • Sense organ: A body part, like the eyes or ears, that spots changes around us.
What are the five senses in KS1 science?

In KS1 science, children learn about five main senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Each sense helps us notice different things and respond safely.

How do our senses keep us safe?

Our senses warn us about danger. We see cars, hear alarms, feel hot surfaces, smell smoke and taste if food is bad, so we can make safe choices.

How can teachers teach the senses through simple activities?

Teachers can use sound-matching games, feely bags, smell pots and taste tests with safe foods to show how each sense works and when to use it carefully.
