Fascinating Fact:

Lots of favourite foods come from plants, like chips, crisps, mash, pasta, bread, fruit salad, and veggie sticks.

In KS1 Science, children find out that many everyday foods start as plants. They learn which plant parts we eat and why choosing plenty of plant foods helps us grow strong and stay well.

  • Edible: Safe to eat.
  • Root vegetable: A plant root we eat, like carrots or potatoes.
  • Grain: A tiny seed from plants like wheat, rice, or corn, used for bread, pasta, and cereals.
Which parts of plants do we eat in everyday foods?

We eat many plant parts: roots (carrots, potatoes), stems (celery), leaves (lettuce, spinach), fruits (apples, tomatoes), and seeds or grains (peas, beans, rice, wheat).

Are all plants safe for children to eat?

No. Some plants are poisonous or can make you poorly. Children should only eat plants that an adult says are safe or that come from shops and gardens grown for food.

How can KS1 children learn about food from plants?

KS1 children can learn by growing simple plants, tasting fruit and vegetables, reading labels, and sorting foods into plant and non-plant groups during science lessons.
