Average can also mean “about the usual amount”. Average height means not very tall and not very short.

In KS1 Vocabulary, children begin to use adjectives to describe people, places and things more clearly. Words such as basic and average help children compare, explain and understand everyday language.

  • Adjective: A word that describes a noun.
  • Basic: Simple and not complicated.
  • Average: Usual or in the middle, not especially high or low.
What is an adjective in KS1?

An adjective in KS1 is a describing word. It gives more information about a noun, such as a big dog, a soft pillow or a noisy class.

What does basic mean for children?

Basic means simple or plain. A basic drawing, meal or plan is one with only the main parts and no extra detail.

What does average mean in simple words?

Average means usual or in the middle. It can describe something that is neither very high nor very low, big nor small.
