In KS1 Vocabulary, children learn that verbs are action words that tell us what people do. Words like these help children talk about movement, tidying and classroom routines.

  • Verb: A word that tells what someone or something does.
  • Sort: To put things into groups because they are the same in some way.
  • Stand: To be on your feet without sitting or lying down.
What is a verb in KS1?

A verb in KS1 is a doing word. It tells what a person, animal or thing is doing, such as run, jump, sort or stand.

What does sort mean for children?

For children, sort means putting things into groups. A child might sort toys by colour, shapes by size or objects by what they are made from.

What does stand mean in simple words?

Stand means to be upright on your feet. Children might stand in a line, stand still in class or stand beside a friend.
