In KS1 Vocabulary, children learn that verbs are action words that tell us what people do. These verbs help children talk about checking, deciding and following instructions.

  • Verb: A word that tells what someone or something does.
  • Test: To try something out or check how well it works.
  • Rule: To control, decide or tell what should happen.
What is a verb in KS1?

A verb in KS1 is a doing word. It tells what a person, animal or thing is doing, such as run, jump, test or rule.

What does test mean for children?

For children, test means to check something or try it out. You might test an idea, test if something works or test what you have learnt.

What does rule mean in simple words?

Rule can mean to control or decide what happens. It can also be used when someone is in charge of a game, a place or a choice.
