In KS1 Vocabulary, children learn that verbs are action words that tell us what people do. These verbs help children talk about noticing things and sharing thoughts or feelings.

  • Verb: A word that tells what someone or something does.
  • Identify: To find out what something is or say its name.
  • Express: To show a feeling, idea or thought.
What is a verb in KS1?

A verb in KS1 is a doing word. It tells what a person, animal or thing is doing, such as run, jump, identify or express.

What does identify mean for children?

For children, identify means to work out what something is or say its name. Children identify colours, shapes, objects, letters and people.

What does express mean in simple words?

Express means to show a thought, feeling or idea. Children can express themselves by talking, writing, drawing, smiling or using actions.
