Fascinating Fact:

Many stories and information books are split into paragraphs. Each paragraph can be about something new.

In KS1 Vocabulary Age 6, children learn that nouns are naming words. They might name a person, a place, an object or an idea, helping sentences make sense.

  • Noun: A word that names a person, place, thing or idea.
  • Person: Someone such as a teacher, friend or child.
  • Idea: Something you think or feel, such as love, fun or hope.
Why do we use nouns in sentences?

We use nouns in sentences to name who or what we are talking about. Without nouns, it would be hard to know the person, place, thing or idea being described.

Can a noun be something you cannot touch?

Yes, a noun can name something you cannot touch. Words like happiness, time and kindness are nouns because they name ideas or feelings.

Is the name of a place a noun?

Yes, the name of a place is a noun. Words such as school, park, town and garden are nouns because they name places.
