In KS1 Vocabulary Age 6, children learn that nouns name things clearly. A noun might name a person, a place, an everyday object or even a feeling.

  • Feeling: An emotion, such as happiness, fear or excitement.
  • Place: Somewhere people or animals can be, such as a town, garden or beach.

Yes, a feeling word can be a noun if it names an emotion or idea. Words like joy, anger and surprise can all be nouns.

What is the difference between a noun and a verb?

A noun names a person, place, thing or idea, but a verb shows an action or doing word. For example, “dog” is a noun and “run” is a verb.

Yes, the name of a place can be a noun in KS1. Words like school, forest, bedroom and shop are nouns because they name places.
