Fascinating Fact:

If you promise to help, you should try your best to do it. A promise is important.

In KS1 Vocabulary Age 6, children learn that verbs show actions and happenings. Verbs help sentences come alive by showing what someone or something does.

  • Verb: A word that shows an action, a happening or what someone or something does.
  • Action: Something that is being done, such as jump, clap, post or smile.
  • Doing word: Another name for a verb because it shows what is happening.
Why are verbs called doing words?

Verbs are called doing words because they show an action or something happening. Words like run, write, open and laugh are verbs.

What happens if a sentence has no verb?

If a sentence has no verb, it usually does not show what is happening. A verb helps make the sentence complete and easier to understand.

Can the same word be a noun and a verb?

Yes, some words can be a noun and a verb. For example, “post” can name a letter item or show the action of sending something.
