Advance can also mean to make progress. You advance when you get better at something.

In KS1 Vocabulary Age 6, children learn that verbs are words for actions and changes. They help sentences show what people, animals and things do or feel.

  • Verb: A word that shows an action, a thought, a feeling or a change.
  • Progress: Moving forward or getting better at something over time.
  • Imagine: To think of pictures, ideas or stories in your mind.
Can a verb show what someone thinks?

Yes, a verb can show thinking. Words like imagine, remember and decide are verbs because they show what someone is doing in their mind.

How do verbs help children tell a story?

Verbs help children tell a story by showing actions and events. They explain what characters do, what changes and what happens next.

What does a verb do in a sentence?

A verb gives the sentence movement and meaning. It tells the reader what the subject is doing, feeling, thinking or becoming.
