For instance, "compliment" and "complement" sound the same, but have two different meanings. In each case the second syllable is unstressed: the i of "compliment" and the e of "complement" are pronounced as a schwa (written like this: ǝ). This rule of English pronunciation makes these words sound identical. Correct spelling relies on other clues in addition to the sound of a word.
