Fascinating Fact:
The Moon’s orbit around Earth takes about twenty seven days, which is why months were originally based on lunar cycles.
In KS3 Maths, measuring time means reading analogue and digital clocks, using the 24 hour clock, and working out elapsed time. You will read timetables, add or subtract times, and plan journeys accurately.
Key Terms
Analogue clock: A clock with hands that shows hours and minutes on a numbered face.
24 hour time: Time written from 00:00 to 23:59 without a.m. or p.m., for example 19:45 for quarter to eight in the evening.
Duration: The amount of time between a start time and an end time.
Frequently Asked Questions (Click to see answers)
How do I convert from 12 hour time to 24 hour time?
For a.m., write the same time with two digits for hours (7:05 a.m. → 07:05). For p.m., add 12 to the hour except 12 p.m. (1:30 p.m. → 13:30; 12:10 p.m. → 12:10).
How do I work out the time between two times?
Use a number line. Count to the next hour, then whole hours, then the minutes to the end time. Example: 09:50 to 12:15 is 10 minutes + 2 hours + 15 minutes = 2 hours 25 minutes.
What does elapsed time mean on a timetable?
Elapsed time is how long a journey or event lasts. Subtract the departure time from the arrival time. Example: 14:18 to 15:02 is 44 minutes.
