Star Wars Quiz

The final film in the Star Wars: Skywalker Saga is due to hit cinema screens on December 20th 2019, but that was too late for one avid fan. A terminally-ill patient at the Rowans Hospice in Waterlooville started following the series back in 1977, when the original Star Wars film was released. His condition meant that he would not live to see the final film but, thanks to a plea he sent out on Twitter, he was given a private early viewing.

That is wonderful news – as a Star Wars enthusiast myself, I would be distraught if I missed the last chapter in the story. Well done Bob Iger, the Chief Executive at Disney, for allowing this. And, speaking of fans, how much do you know about Star Wars? Well, now’s your chance to find out.

Some of these questions should pose no problem for would-be Jedi, whilst others will test even the most ardent Sith. May the force be with you!

1.
Every single film in the Star Wars franchise begins with which words?
Once upon a time, in a land far away...
It was the worst of times, it was the best of times...
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…
Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy...
Each film made so far (all eleven of them!) begins with these words accompanied by silence. Then come the famous musical fanfare and the scrolling text which sets the scene - at least in the Skywalker Saga. The two standalone films do have the classic words, but not the scrolling text
2.
Star Wars is the brainchild of which film-maker, who also brought us Indiana Jones and the David Bowie film, Labyrinth?
Steven Spielberg
Peter Jackson
James Cameron
George Lucas
Before he made Star Wars, Lucas had mixed success. His first film, THX 1138 got great reviews but made little money. His second offering, American Graffiti fared better but his third, Star Wars, became the highest-earning film ever made
3.
The comic relief in Star Wars has been provided by two "droids". What are their names?
K9 and B-10
R2-D2 and C-3PO
XTC and 10-CC
R34D1NG and B3G1NN1NG
R2-D2 means "Second Generation Robotic Droid Series-2", whilst C-3PO stands for "Custom Third Party Object"
4.
In the prequel series of films, we watch as Luke's father becomes the Sith Lord, Darth Vader. What was his original name?
Anakin Skywalker
Ahsoka Starkiller
Jacen Snootles
Shriv Suurgav
We watch as Anakin is seduced by the dark side of the force, only to redeem himself at the climax of Return of the Jedi. According to one story, the name "Vader" is based on the German or Dutch for "father", making the title mean "Dark Father" - apt, considering who he is!
5.
Which character, who first appears in The Phantom Menace, has the unwelcome position of "Most hated character in the history of film"?
Clue: he was not a human, but a Gungan.
Jar Jar Binks
Yoda
Ponda Baba
Chewbacca
According to Ahmed Best, the actor who played Jar Jar, his character was to develop into a major villain in subsequent films. However, the poor reception Jar Jar received from critics and the public, meant that he was all-but written out of the story
6.
Emperor Palpatine is the main antagonist in Star Wars. He is a politician but also a Sith Lord. What is his Sith title?
Darth Bane
Darth Plagueis
Darth Sidious
Darth Maul
As a politician, Palpatine manages to have himself declared Supreme Emperor, through machiavellian means. He then destroys the Jedi and rules the Galaxy as a tyrant - until the son of Anakin Skywalker, and Anakin himself, destroy him
7.
As well as The Skywalker Saga, there have been two standalone Star Wars films. The first is set immediately before the events in the original film. What is its name?
Solo
Rogue One
The Clone Wars
Splinter of the Mind's Eye
Rogue One was made in a different tone and style from the usual Star Wars films. Rather than high fantasy, it is more of a war film. Other standalone films are planned, each with their own style
8.
Which character, a mentor to Luke Skywalker and to his father, has been played by Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor?
Wedge Antilles
Mace Windu
Biggs Darklighter
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Guinness' performance as Obi-Wan earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. This is the only time Star Wars has come close to winning an Oscar for acting, though it has won many for its music, its special effects, and its costume design
9.
The Star Wars theme is instantly recognisable, and won its composer the Oscar for Best Original Score in 1978. Who was that composer?
Howard Shore
John Williams
Ramin Djawadi
James Horner
Williams has written the music for over 100 films, including Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Harry Potter, The Book Thief and Seven Years in Tibet
10.
What is the name of the famous starship which belonged to Lando Calrissian, until he lost it in a bet with Han Solo?
The Raven's Claw
The Corellian Corvette
The Millennium Falcon
The Nebulon Frigate
The ship is a modified YT-1300 Corellian light freighter. It is commanded by smuggler Han Solo and his first mate, the Wookiee, Chewbacca
