Questions About Words 2

Welcome to the second in our series of Eleven Plus Verbal Reasoning quizzes on Questions About Words. What sort of questions about words will children have to answer in the exam? Straightforward ones about a list of five words, such as these:

  • Which consonant appears most frequently?
  • Which vowel does not appear in any word?
  • Which word would come first in a dictionary?
  • Which vowel appears most frequently?
  • Which word would appear last in a dictionary?

As you can see, for children expected to do well in the 11+, these questions are not very challenging. Almost every 10-year-old can put words into alphabetical order. Nevertheless, practice is always helpful. The more you play these quizzes, the less likely you will be to make mistakes when you take your test.

Looking at the first letters of each word, ‘W’ comes after ‘K’, ‘P, and ‘F’ in the alphabet, so the answer is either ‘waking’ or ‘waffle’. Looking at their second letters, both have ‘A’, so we move on to the third. ‘F’ comes before ‘K’ in the alphabet so ‘waking’ would appear last in a dictionary

‘P’ comes before ‘R’, ‘S’ and ‘T’ in the alphabet and two of the words start with a ‘P’, so we must look at their second letters. ‘Perish and ‘permit both have ‘E’ as their second letter, so we now look at their third letters and find that both have an ‘R’, so we go on to the fourth letter. ‘I’ comes before ‘M’ in the alphabet so ‘perish’ will appear before ‘permit’ in a dictionary
